Judge Judy and Jerry Sheindlin married in 1977, divorced in 1990 and remarried the following year. Jerry, a former criminal defense lawyer and judge who served as an acting New York Supreme Court justice, later presided over TV’s The People’s Court from 1999 to 2001.
Jerry earned his law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1959. He was appointed a U.S. administrative law judge in 1980, became a criminal court judge in 1983 and began serving as an acting New York Supreme Court justice in 1986. He also wrote two books, including Genetic Fingerprinting: The Law and Science of DNA Evidence and Blood Trail.
They blended five children from earlier marriages and have 13 grandchildren. Jerry said their 1990 divorce followed Judy’s unhappiness with his support while she was coping with her father’s death; both later said they missed each other, and they remarried in 1991 in the chambers of a New York Supreme Court justice friend.
