Jeff Probst says Survivor kept its diversity approach despite Paramount’s DEI rollback

Variety

Survivor host Jeff Probst told The New York Times that the show’s diversity approach is unchanged despite Paramount’s 2025 DEI rollback. He said people from different walks of life make its stories more interesting and diversity is essential to the storytelling.

Paramount rolled back its DEI initiatives in 2025 to align with Trump’s mandates. Probst said he feels no pressure and no one asks him to recount casting numbers. He said casting chief Jesse Tannenbaum knows “there’s no stopping” because, in Probst’s view, diversity is needed for the story.

Probst said casting and storytelling have changed since Survivor began in 2000: early seasons cast “for type” and sought friction, arguments and finger-pointing. When he became showrunner in 2010, he said he wanted a more cinematic series, stories drawing on Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” and a family show; he said those goals changed who was cast and the stories told.
