Jeff Garlin says he had undiagnosed bipolar disorder while filming “The Goldbergs” and described himself as sometimes “really, really mean.” Co-star Wendi McLendon-Covey disputed his account; Garlin said he was diagnosed after leaving the sitcom in 2021.
On The Daily Beast’s “Obsessed” podcast, Garlin said he was miserable with the show and his performance, did not believe McLendon-Covey’s encouragement, and felt he had to leave; he said she was resentful. On Instagram, she said the crew, other actors, writers and executives remembered events differently.
Shortly before leaving in 2021, Garlin said an HR investigation into his on-set behavior had been underway for three years. Allegations included unwanted hugging and touching and jokes that made people uncomfortable; Garlin said he and Sony disagreed over whether his comedy made the workplace unsafe.
