The Senate on Thursday rejected a resolution seeking to end the Iran war, 49-50, six weeks before the midterms. Four Republicans voted for it, while Democrat John Fetterman opposed it; the measure needed 50 votes to pass.
Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul and Thom Tillis were the four Republicans who supported the measure. Democrat Angela Alsobrooks missed the vote because of an urgent family matter; her absence did not change the outcome. The House passed the concurrent resolution 214-208 in July, but it would have had no legally enforceable effect and required no presidential signature.
The vote is expected to be the Senate's final war-powers action before the midterms. Sen. Tim Kaine said the administration was violating the Constitution and War Powers Act; the White House has argued the act is unconstitutional. NPR reported nationwide gasoline at $4.48 a gallon and diesel above $6.50, amid economic pressure on Republican incumbents. The Department of Defense has confirmed at least 19 U.S. service members killed since fighting began in late February; NPR has questioned whether the Pentagon fully disclosed casualties and financial costs.
