Iowa beats Michigan 20-19 after late penalty extends final drive

SB Nation

Michigan lost 20-19 to Iowa on a touchdown pass as time expired after Zeke Berry’s unnecessary-roughness penalty gave the Hawkeyes a first down on their final drive. The Wolverines had eight penalties for 75 yards; Berry’s foul came after an Iowa third-down incompletion.

The incompletion came on third-and-12 at Iowa’s 40-yard line. Berry’s penalty gave the Hawkeyes a first down and 15 yards of field position; four plays later, quarterback Hank Brown threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee. AP’s Josh Dubow reported that Michigan’s 32 penalties in its first four games are the second-most the team has recorded in that span since at least 2000. Michigan had eight or more penalties in three of Kyle Whittingham’s four games, compared with once in 25 games under Sherrone Moore.

After the loss, Whittingham called the penalties “excessive” and said a couple were especially costly, particularly on the final drive. After Michigan’s 11-penalty win over Oklahoma in Week 2, he had called the team “too undisciplined.” Safety Rod Moore called the mistakes “stupid” and said the team needed to be smarter and execute better.
