An inquest heard that Declan Berry, 18, was driving 90 mph before his VW Polo plunged into the River Nene at Wisbech St Mary on March 17, where he and 16-year-old passenger Eden Bunn died. A survivor said Berry replied, “we will be fine,” when asked to slow down.
A police report presented at the inquest described the car’s speed as “the most significant contributory factor” in the crash; it also said road conditions, including numerous potholes, played a part. The road’s speed limit was 60 mph.
The Polo carried five teenagers; three passengers escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. Bunn’s body was recovered from the river on March 17, while Berry’s was recovered two weeks later, on March 31. Bunn’s family said her death had left them heartbroken and that “nothing will bring Eden back.”
