Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith asked Capitol security to remove a reporter who questioned her about the district attorney’s decision not to issue an indictment in Nolan Wells’ death investigation. She refused to answer, saying she does not do hallway interviews.
A U.S. Capitol Police officer told the reporter Hyde-Smith was unwilling to give an interview and accused him of harassing her. Democratic Senate challenger Scott Colom called the exchange “deeply disappointing” and urged the district attorney and Jackson County law enforcement to share investigation findings with Wells’ family and the public. Colom said authorities should release as much as legally possible about witness statements while protecting witnesses’ privacy and sharing what forensic evidence indicated. He said Mississippi law gives authorities greater discretion to release information after six months.
