New York House nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier was arrested Thursday at a Manhattan protest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the U.N. General Assembly. Police began arrests after protesters sitting in the roadway refused to move.
City & State New York reported the protest drew about 250 people to First Avenue and 39th Street. Media reports said roughly 80 to 100 protesters who stayed after police orders to leave were arrested. City Council members Chi Ossé and Alexa Avilés were also arrested, according to City & State; the Daily Mail reported actress Susan Sarandon was among those detained.
Avila Chevalier’s campaign said in a social-media post that she was “peacefully protesting” Netanyahu’s speech. She later said Netanyahu belonged at The Hague rather than addressing the U.N. Her campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News’s request for more information, and the NYPD declined to provide further details.
