Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa says her bid to challenge Gov. Greg Abbott will prioritize economic issues and working families over culture-war disputes. She told Politico that Democrats should follow that approach.
Hinojosa has said she chose to carry her first baby to term after the baby received a life-limiting diagnosis; she says the experience reinforced her belief that every woman should decide what is right for her. In a recent ad, she joked that her pronouns were “mom, Texan and soon-to-be governor.”
Hinojosa entered politics by organizing parents to keep her son's Austin elementary school open when budget cuts threatened it. She later won school-board and Texas House seats, making education funding a priority.
