Work has begun on two pipelines for Havant Thicket Reservoir in Hampshire; the project’s estimated cost has more than doubled to over £800m, and completion is now expected in 2034, later than planned. The pipes will run between Bedhampton Springs and the reservoir.
Portsmouth Water said the cost increase was partly due to an extra pipeline added to future-proof the project and unexpected ground conditions. The additional line would serve a proposed water-recycling scheme: treated wastewater from Budds Farm would enter the reservoir, then be taken out for further treatment before being supplied to customers. The scheme has proved controversial with campaigners.
Laying the two pipes is expected to take three years and involve 1,250 sections. The completed reservoir is designed to hold about 8.7 billion litres and protect rare chalk streams of the rivers Test and Itchen. Regulator Ofwat is consulting on increased funding for the project.
