Guillermo Díaz says gay roles drew more hesitation than drug-dealer parts

Guillermo Díaz says he was typecast early as a “thug” and drug dealer, while people around him were more nervous about gay and drag roles. He sought different parts in Party Girl and Stonewall, and publicly came out as gay in 1995 while promoting Stonewall.

Díaz recalled that his Weeds audition was “super easy” after years of similar roles on Law & Order and elsewhere. He was initially meant to appear for only a few episodes, but his character became recurring from seasons 3 to 8. He said he appeared in each season, though not every episode.

Díaz said Party Girl and Stonewall changed how people saw him, giving him room to pursue other opportunities while continuing to take gritty roles. He said that path ultimately led to his career-defining turn on Scandal.
