Trailing Atlanta with no timeouts on Dec. 18, 1994, Brett Favre ignored Mike Holmgren’s order not to run and scored a late 9-yard touchdown, giving Green Bay a 21-17 lead. Jon Gruden said a failed scramble could have cost him, Holmgren and Andy Reid their jobs.
Recalling the play on the Gruden Family Football Show, Favre said he did not think the post route was open and believed forcing a pass would have been riskier than scrambling. He described the decision as spontaneous, not planned.
Favre completed 29 of 44 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Green Bay then beat Tampa Bay the following week to clinch a playoff berth, before defeating Detroit in the wild-card round.
