Anthony Gordon says England should build on their own strengths rather than imitate Spain’s possession-based style, arguing that controlling games is not in the team’s “DNA.” He made the case before England face world champions Spain on Saturday.
England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, then beat France 6-4 in the bronze-medal match for their best finish since 1966. Gordon started five games, scored against Argentina and provided four assists; he was substituted 17 minutes after his semi-final goal.
Gordon, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle for £69.3m this summer, said his experience in La Liga had shown him how differently Spanish players keep possession. He said the semi-final defeat left a “scar” that might shape England’s approach in future tournaments, and defended Thomas Tuchel, saying the players also had to take responsibility for not taking the initiative.
