GOP Senate hopefuls seek Iran war’s end as voters blame it for high gas prices

The Hill

GOP Senate candidates Mike Rogers, Jon Husted and Ashley Hinson urge a swift end to the nearly seven-month Iran war as more voters blame it for high gas prices; a CNN poll found approval of Trump’s handling among Republicans fell from 73% in March to 60%.

Democrats are expected to force a vote later this week on a House-passed war-powers resolution directing Trump to withdraw troops. Sen. Thom Tillis says he will support it; Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul are expected to vote yes, while Sen. Bill Cassidy has hinted he may. The measure is expected to gain more GOP support, and a source familiar with the whip count said it has a good chance of passing. Sen. Jim Justice called the war a “quagmire” but said Trump cannot simply leave while Iran still has a path to nuclear weapons.

A Fox News poll of 1,211 registered voters, conducted Sept. 11–14, found 71% thought Trump lacked a clear strategy to end the war. Recent polls showed Rogers and Husted trailing Abdul El-Sayed and Sherrod Brown, respectively; Cook Political Report shifted Hinson’s Iowa race to “toss-up.”
