Georgia Power and Google announced Sept. 21 an agreement to support upgrades at the Vogtle and Hatch nuclear stations that could add about 96 megawatts, subject to regulatory approval. Georgia Power projects roughly $900 million in customer benefits over the units’ lifetimes.
Georgia Power said Google’s support could help fund upgrades at the utility’s ownership shares in both stations. Increasing output at existing reactors avoids some siting and construction risks of a new plant, but the article says 96 MW is modest compared with gigawatt-scale data-center demand and the project depends on successful engineering.
