GM unveils new V-8s for 2027 pickups, including a 481-hp engine

GM unveiled new V-8s for its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra as EV demand cools. The 6.6-liter produces 481 horsepower; GM says it beats any naturally aspirated half-ton engine. V-8s account for 55% of Silverado and roughly 61% of Sierra 1500 sales.

Silverado sales fell 4.6% in the first half of 2026, Sierra sales were roughly flat, and Ram sales rose 19%. A federal investigation into failures in GM’s current 6.2-liter V-8 adds a launch risk. GM says the redesigned engines will avoid those problems, but recalls, warranty costs or customer concerns could blunt the new trucks’ financial benefit, the article says.

GM began developing the engine family in 2018, and the lineup also includes a diesel and an upgraded turbocharged four-cylinder. The article says weak EV demand and looser federal fuel-economy policy could extend the gas engines’ commercial life as GM adjusts EV spending to customer demand. Faster EV adoption or tighter emissions rules could require investment in both combustion and electric programs.
