Sabrina Carpenter is reportedly set to play Ginger Rogers in an untitled Fred Astaire biopic starring Tom Holland as Astaire; Margaret Qualley will play his sister, Adele. Deadline reported the casting on Sept. 25. Paul King is directing.
Rogers and Astaire first appeared together in 1933’s Flying Down to Rio, made nine films together from 1933 to 1939, and reunited in 1949 for The Barkleys of Broadway. Qualley’s role is Adele Astaire, Fred’s sister and first major dance partner; the siblings initially performed as a vaudeville act.
The screenplay by King and Steven Levenson is based on Kathleen Riley’s biography The Astaires: Fred & Adele; Amy Pascal and Rachel O’Connor are producing. Holland said he had started rehearsals and hopes to avoid relying on stunt performers and film Astaire’s elaborate dance sequences in one shot.
