Students across Germany are striking over possible conscription; organisers say over 100 demonstrations are planned. The voluntary-service law took effect in January; Parliament may consider conscription if security worsens or too few volunteers come forward.
Under the law, all 18-year-olds receive a questionnaire asking whether they are interested and willing to join the armed forces; it is mandatory for men and voluntary for women. The Defence Ministry says medical examinations are required for all men liable for service who were born after 31 December 2007.
Organisers say the protests were triggered by invitations sent to some 18-year-olds in Kiel and Flensburg for medical exams despite their stating on registration forms that they were not interested in joining. The ministry told the BBC that around 1,000 18-year-old men who showed no interest in the army have undergone exams since July.
