Two men returning from a Royal Caribbean cruise reportedly found hundreds of spiderlings on their car at Galveston’s Cruise Terminal 10, Uber driver Donnie Broussard said. He said other passengers had reported spiders in the lot weeks earlier.
Broussard said he drove the men to a nearby Walmart to buy pesticide. Other people in a local Facebook group also described spiders in their cars; one said they had emerged from the vents.
A local Facebook commenter suggested seasonal dispersal as a possible explanation: spiderlings can travel on fine silk carried by wind, a behavior called ballooning. The commenter said egg sacs may contain 300 or more spiderlings, and as many as 1,200 for a yellow garden spider; the article does not identify the species found. A South Texas pest-control company says spider activity often becomes more noticeable from late summer into fall. The Port of Galveston had been contacted for comment.
