Fran García said he asked Real Madrid to let him leave before joining Real Betis. He said he understood another €60 million signing would follow Álvaro Carreras, who he said cost €50 million, and that the club would prioritize signings over an academy player.
García said he had played in almost every season at Madrid despite knowing his role in the squad. He said the Betis move came together quickly: the club called at night, he packed the next morning and travelled to Germany with the squad the following day, when Madrid already knew he was moving.
García described his first season at Real Madrid as special, saying the team won the league, Champions League and Super Cup. He said the trophies and achieving childhood dreams made a lasting impression.
