A shooting in New Town, North Dakota, left two people dead and one injured Friday evening; one victim was identified as Marc Smith Jr., 23. Four suspects have been apprehended, and the FBI is leading the ongoing investigation.
A shelter-in-place order for New Town and Four Bears was issued at about 10:28 p.m. Friday after the MHA Emergency Operations Center reported two men in black were believed to be on foot in New Town. Residents were told to stay inside, lock their doors and avoid windows. The order was lifted at 6:10 a.m. Saturday after the center determined there was no longer a public-safety threat.
New Town Public Schools canceled classes Monday, Sept. 28, to give students, staff and families time to process the events. Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College also closed Monday and made counseling available to students; normal operations were expected to resume Tuesday.
