Former Trump adviser Gary Cohn said the US should preserve its chip advantage as Nvidia hopes to resume China sales. The US has allowed Nvidia to ship H200 chips to approved Chinese customers, but Beijing has so far restricted shipments; Blackwell chips remain unavailable there.
The H200 is an older-generation chip than Nvidia’s current Blackwell processors. Yahoo Finance said being unable to sell Blackwell chips in China likely leaves Nvidia billions of dollars in sales on the table. The company has not included any China sales in its outlook for the year.
Cohn, now IBM’s vice chair, said China can build data centers wherever it wants and faces fewer environmental hurdles, while the US’s key advantage is its chips and domestic chip manufacturing. Nvidia shares were up 21% year to date, which the article attributed to the US AI boom.
