Jeoff Long, a former infielder for the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox, died Friday, Sept. 25, in Elsmere, Kentucky, at 84. He played two MLB seasons, recording 16 hits while appearing in 17 games on defense and 39 as a pinch-hitter.
Long made his major-league debut in July 1963 as a pinch-hitter for Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson. He later got a hit in his only at-bat against Sandy Koufax and retired after the 1969 season, his seventh in the minors.
Away from baseball, Long won the 1975 National Open Long Driving contest, beating several PGA Tour pros, and was runner-up the following year. He competed through 1984. He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and daughter Lindsay, a diver.
