The US Supreme Court on Friday for a third time blocked Missouri’s Republican-drawn congressional map for the November 3 midterms, suspending lower-court rulings that had required its use. Absentee voting is already underway in the state.
The 8th US Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday upheld a temporary order by US District Judge Stephen Clark favoring the new map and directed him to make it permanent, despite the Supreme Court’s September 10 block. People Not Politicians was among the challengers who sought another intervention.
Missouri’s Supreme Court ruled on September 3 that the 2025 map could not be used in the midterms until it was first put to a voter referendum. Adopted by state Republicans, the map dismantled a Kansas City-based House district held by Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver.
