Heavy rain-triggered floods and landslides have killed over 100 people in India and Nepal, officials said Monday. Uttar Pradesh officials reported 81 deaths since Friday; Nepal officials reported at least 27 dead, four missing and seven injured.
Three days of intense rain and strong winds in Uttar Pradesh flooded roads and lanes, cutting off villages. Deaths were caused by flooding, mudslides, building collapses, falling trees and electrocution. The state relief commissioner's office said more than 2,000 hectares of cropland were damaged and over 100 animals killed. India's Meteorological Department said a depression over central India brought the rain to Uttar Pradesh; Nepal's disaster authority said it was still gathering information.
