An Indonesian Instagram video viewed over 430,000 times falsely claimed the World Economic Forum proposed putting vaccines in drinking water. A 2022 WEF clip shows professor Mariana Mazzucato discussing water as a shared global concern; no speaker suggested it.
The footage comes from a May 25, 2022, press conference in Davos launching the Global Commission on the Economics of Water. Mazzucato was one of its four co-chairs. The commission said its goal was to rethink how water is valued and governed, treating a stable hydrological cycle as a global common good.
Vaccine experts told AFP that water would dilute vaccines and expose them to chemicals that could destabilize them; another said vaccines require refrigeration and most must be injected to prompt immune protection. The claim circulated as vaccine hesitancy grows in Indonesia: Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in June that refusals were rising, and a Straits Times report cited by AFP attributed a March measles surge partly to lower childhood immunization rates.
