A flood emergency was declared across all 50 Bangkok districts after 48 hours of heavy rain submerged roads. Residents were urged to stay home; those near canals were advised to move belongings upstairs. No casualties have yet been reported in the city.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said eastern Bangkok was hardest hit. Officials were trying to pump water out, but he said canals were full and people living near them were at risk.
The extreme weather had inundated Bangkok’s drainage system, causing traffic chaos on its already congested roads. The Thai Meteorological Service forecast further heavy rain through the week; rain was expected to continue into Sunday, and the low-pressure area causing recent downpours was expected to move toward central Thailand.
