Trauma surgeon Dr. Feroze Sidhwa hopes to return to Gaza early next year after an Israeli airstrike hit the Nasser Hospital surgical unit where he was working in March 2025. His mother fears for his safety; he says, “Somebody’s got to go do this.”
The March 23, 2025, blast killed two people; Sidhwa said one was his patient. CBS News sources said Ismail Barhoum, a political Hamas member and spokesperson receiving treatment there, was the target.
The UN says more than 1,000 aid workers have been killed over the past three years. Humanitarian Outcomes’ database reports violent incidents affecting aid workers have risen more than 1,500% since 2000, with at least 160 major attacks so far this year. Trauma surgeon Michael Samotowka, who travels to Ukraine six to 10 times a year, said he would continue going and urged nations at war to respect the Geneva Conventions. The State Department said it favors accountability for attacks on aid workers and hospitals and condemns such violence.
