Wakefern recalled select jars of Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after FDA testing found patulin above safety limits. The company says not to eat it; customers can return it for a refund or replacement. No illnesses or injuries were reported as of Sept. 22.
The recalled 23-ounce jars carry UPC 04119005677 and a June 16, 2027, best-by date. They were distributed through ShopRite, Price Rite Marketplace, The Fresh Grocer, Gourmet Garage and Fairway Market. Wakefern did not disclose the number of jars or a complete state-by-state distribution list; its broader supermarket footprint is not confirmed recall area. Patulin is a toxin produced by molds and associated with apples. FDA guidance sets a 50-parts-per-billion action level for apple juice, concentrates and products containing apple juice; the agency says it may consider regulatory action at or above that level. Wakefern has not disclosed the amount detected in the recalled applesauce.
