Netflix’s “Unabomber” ends with FBI agents arresting Ted Kaczynski at his Montana cabin after investigators find what appears to be a draft of the manifesto among his brother David’s belongings. A ruse draws Kaczynski outside; a search then finds a ready-to-mail bomb.
David really did contact the FBI after his wife recognized similarities between the manifesto and Ted’s old letters. The film’s agent Joanne Miller is fictional, and its CBS deal differs from the real account: Time reported that CBS had independently obtained David’s name. The FBI said Kaczynski’s cabin held bomb components, a live bomb ready to mail and 40,000 handwritten journal pages about bomb-making and the attacks.
The film also ends its Harvard storyline with Kaczynski giving Professor Henry A. Murray a copy of Moby-Dick marked with passages. In real life, Kaczynski pleaded guilty in 1998 and received life without parole; he died by suicide in June 2023 at age 81 while suffering from late-stage cancer, the Associated Press reported.
