Pfizer is enforcing a Belgian judgment requiring Poland and Romania to pay €1.9 billion for vaccine doses they declined under a 2021 EU contract. Eurocontrol has frozen route-fee transfers to their aviation agencies as both countries challenge enforcement.
The April Brussels court rejected both governments’ arguments for abandoning pandemic-era purchase commitments. The amount is €1.3 billion for Poland and €600 million for Romania. Romania’s health minister said the ruling remains enforceable during an appeal, while Poland said it would pursue all available legal remedies.
Poland’s air-traffic agency says airline fees account for more than 80% of its income. Polish and Romanian aviation authorities warn that withholding the funds could threaten essential operations and air safety; appeals leave the timing and ultimate recovery uncertain.
