The new EU-Canada OceanEye alliance secured at least €211 million ($240 million) in pledges to support ocean-observation networks for navigation, weather and climate forecasting, and coastal protection.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the initiative at the UN General Assembly in New York. The alliance has 30 country members plus the EU. The EU announced €92 million in seed funding, while Canada said it would spend C$82 million ($58 million) over five years.
The funding will support observing networks through technology development and added equipment on the high seas and in space, including sensors and satellites.
