New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill asked Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell to resign by Friday after a probe commissioned by her office found workplace-policy violations and cited alleged ethics breaches. Caldwell’s lawyer called it one-sided; Caldwell denies the alleged “young sperm” remark.
The report said Caldwell made an advance toward a staffer’s friend and, after being rebuffed, told the staffer, “you young women are looking for young sperm.” His lawyer said a trooper present did not hear the comment. The report also said Caldwell recommended a leadership promotion for a woman he was dating; the lawyer acknowledged this, but said Caldwell believed she was qualified and did not order anyone to promote her.
The report identified seven ticketed events from Feb. 19 to May 23 where Caldwell reportedly brought one or more guests without paying; tickets ranged from $65 to $300. Sherrill cannot fire him but can remove some responsibilities. The Legislature can impeach and remove a lieutenant governor.
