The 101-59 Brewers face St. Louis tonight, seeking win No. 102 with two regular-season games left. Dustin May starts for a final postseason tune-up. Joey Ortiz is unavailable with a right-knee bruise; Pat Murphy said he also has an abdominal strain and groin injury.
The Brewers will operate with one fewer bench player rather than place Ortiz on the injured list. They are within 10 days of the NLDS, and an IL stint would make him unavailable for the series, Murphy said. Jonathan Ornelas is with the club but has not been activated.
May has had several short outings lately, some by design or outside his control, and has been working on his pitch mix and sequencing. St. Louis starter Quinn Mathews, a left-hander with a 3.65 ERA, faces a largely right-handed Brewers lineup.
