Don Cooper, former Yankees pitcher and longtime Chicago White Sox pitching coach, has died at 70, the White Sox announced Wednesday. He spent nearly two decades in the role and was on staff for Chicago’s 2005 World Series championship, sealed by an 11-1 postseason run.
Cooper joined Chicago’s organization as a minor-league pitching coach in 1988 and became its major-league pitching coach in 2002. He spent 32 seasons with the club before it parted ways with him after the 2020 season.
During Cooper’s tenure, Mark Buehrle and Philip Humber pitched perfect games, and Lucas Giolito threw a no-hitter. Cooper also served as Chicago’s interim manager for the final two games of the 2011 season.
