A Reddit DIYer got two dual-axis solar trackers working after they sat boxed for two years, linking them to move together. The builder called the result “functional yard art” to teach neighbors about solar, while saying extra fixed panels are usually cheaper.
The builder connected both trackers to one controller through an external H-bridge relay, mounted the panels on a custom welded steel-tube frame and upgraded to 660-pound actuators to support the added weight.
Dual-axis trackers are designed to follow the sun across the sky and can increase output when panel space is limited. Their moving parts, controls, maintenance needs and installation complexity can add costs; where space allows, extra fixed panels may be simpler and cheaper.
