The Dixon Gallery & Gardens in Memphis has opened “An Investment in Pleasure,” a 50th-anniversary exhibition featuring nearly 180 works by artists including Monet, Matisse and Cézanne. The show traces the museum’s collection and is on view through Jan. 10.
Founded in 1976 in Margaret and Hugo Dixon’s former home, the museum began with a bequest of 27 paintings, two works on paper and six sculptures. Its holdings have since grown to about 2,000 pieces, including collections of porcelain and pewter.
Organized by curator Julie Pierotti, the exhibition starts with works from the Dixons’ original bequest and moves through later acquisitions, including Fauvist, Cubist and modernist art. It also features Memphis artists Ted Rust, Burton Callicott and Carroll Cloar.
