Diamondbacks’ three-run ninth falls short in 10-7 loss to Padres

SB Nation

The Diamondbacks lost 10-7 to San Diego after a three-run ninth-inning rally, leaving them needing a win over the Padres in the regular-season finale and a Phillies loss to Tampa Bay to reach the postseason; either an Arizona loss or Philadelphia win eliminates them.

James McCann’s two-run homer put Arizona ahead 4-3 in the fourth, but San Diego scored seven straight runs to lead 10-4. In the ninth, Arizona loaded the bases against closer Mason Miller; after three runs scored, Ildemaro Vargas struck out to end the game.

The Diamondbacks-Padres finale was scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Arizona time, with Michael Soroka starting for Arizona. San Diego had not announced its starter after clinching the top wild-card spot and associated home-field advantage.
