Spain coach Luis de la Fuente says the World Cup helped Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal become a better player, team-mate and person. He says Yamal contributed to Spain even when he was not at his peak and rejects criticism of his ego, calling him a diligent team player.
De la Fuente said Yamal’s ambition is valuable when it serves the team’s collective goal. He cited Yamal’s rapport with 38-year-old Jesus Navas at Euro 2024 and said 29-year-old Oyarzabal is someone Yamal listens to and looks up to. The coach said he selects players for their character as well as footballing ability and wants a squad that fits his family-like team philosophy.
Spain were due to return to action against England at Wembley in the Nations League later that day, in their first match since the World Cup.
