David Kaczynski, who helped authorities identify his brother Ted as the Unabomber, retired with his wife from jobs at a Buddhist monastery in Woodstock, New York, in 2015; they later moved to Texas. He has also lectured on mental illness.
In 2016, Kaczynski published his memoir, Every Last Tie: A Memoir of the Unabomber and His Family. After Ted's arrest, David and his wife tried to contact some of the victims; most did not respond. David stayed in touch with Gary Wright, who was injured in a 1987 bombing, and the two appeared at a Yom Kippur event in California after Ted's death in 2023.
David told The New York Times in 2025 that he sent Ted dozens of letters over nearly three decades in an effort to reopen communication. Ted rarely replied and refused to put David on his visitors list. Ted died by suicide in prison in June 2023.
