Charleston County school board member Darlene Roberson is scheduled to face a Sept. 28 hearing before a three-member panel over allegations of misconduct and conflicts of interest; the process could lead Gov. Henry McMaster to remove her from office.
The state Office of the Inspector General’s Aug. 27 report alleged that Roberson disclosed confidential information to local media and district vendors, used her board position for personal gain, and fraudulently billed the district illegal late fees for services she provided as a vendor. McMaster requested the investigation.
A 2022 amended law allows the governor to remove trustees for malfeasance, conflicts of interest and other listed grounds, but requires written charges and a chance to be heard on reasonable notice. Roberson’s lawyers told the governor on Sept. 9 she wanted to be heard; she is expected to give oral arguments and answer questions at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 in Columbia. The panel will determine the hearing’s procedures.
