Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández recognized boarding school survivors and descendants ahead of the Sept. 30 National Day of Remembrance, urging support for H.R. 7325. FEMA will test nationwide emergency alerts Nov. 17, briefly interrupting radio and TV programming.
Leger Fernández said New Mexico had 52 Indian boarding schools and urged lawmakers to back H.R. 7325, which would establish a commission to investigate and document federal boarding school policies and their generational effects. The National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition welcomed her recognition and called for remembrance to be accompanied by action.
FEMA and the FCC expect the Nov. 17 test to begin at about 2:20 p.m. Eastern, interrupting radio, television, cable, satellite and wireline video services nationwide. The message will say no action is required; regular programming is expected to resume by about 2:50 p.m. ET.
