Sen. John Curtis asked the Senate Judiciary Committee to investigate after ProPublica reported that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on Donald Trump Jr.’s Bahamas wedding party. Grassley said he’d review the request but made no commitment.
Curtis asked the panel to examine whether presidential family relationships had been used for private financial benefit, preferential treatment or access, and urged subpoenas for Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden on their business dealings, foreign relationships and gifts. Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin joined the call to investigate Trump Jr., but noted Hunter Biden had already given Congress a sworn deposition in 2024.
Trump said his son had repaid Kremlev and described a friend paying for a wedding celebration as common. Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, confirmed Kremlev funded aspects of the party; they defended accepting the gift, saying the celebration followed their wedding ceremony and was not politically motivated. Sen. John Cornyn supported Curtis’s request, while Sen. Thom Tillis criticized Trump Jr.’s judgment and cited the Senate’s time crunch before lawmakers left to campaign.
