Thomas Gigler remains missing after Carnival said footage confirmed he went overboard from the Carnival Panorama on a Puerto Vallarta–Long Beach cruise. After more than 41 hours of searching across more than 1,707 square miles, the Coast Guard suspended its search Sept. 22.
Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles–Long Beach received the missing-person report at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Rescue Coordination Center Alameda took over coordination. Fixed-wing aircraft, the Mexican Navy and commercial vessels joined the search. The Coast Guard said it could resume if new information emerged.
Gigler, 56, of Redlands, California, was traveling with his wife and three sons. Passengers were asked to return to their staterooms during the search; the ship changed course before continuing to California and returning to Long Beach on September 20 after its seven-night cruise. Carnival said it was supporting the family. The circumstances leading to Gigler going overboard have not been publicly established.
