Indiana beat Northwestern 29-23 Friday for its 20th straight win and a 4-0 start to its national-title defense. Coach Curt Cignetti called two illegal-snap penalties on the Hoosiers’ first two offensive snaps “befuddling” and said the calls came as a surprise.
Cignetti burned a timeout after the opening flags to address the officials. He said officials usually give a coach a heads-up when an opponent points out an illegal practice.
Cignetti said he was pleased with the win and that fans disappointed by the narrow result had a “national championship hangover.”
