Kansas City beat Indianapolis 33-30 in overtime, but the Colts gained 329 yards and Daniel Jones went five quarters without a sack. Defensive line coach Joe Cullen says the pass rush must improve, particularly against quick throws, before Sunday's visit to Miami.
The performance contrasted with Kansas City's 31-10 season-opening win over Denver, when it sacked Bo Nix four times and held the Broncos to 176 total yards. Cullen credited Indianapolis' physical offensive line; he said a George Karlaftis offside penalty turned third-and-11 into third-and-6, and the ball came out quicker.
Defensive tackle Chris Jones said the overtime win showed the team's resilience but acknowledged areas for improvement. Cullen said the pass rush and coverage must work together: when a slant is released in about 2.2 seconds, defenders may need to adjust the rush and get their hands up. He also praised Dolphins running back De'Von Achane, citing 5.7 yards per carry last year, and noted Kansas City faced quarterback Malik Willis when he played for Tennessee in a 2022 game that went to overtime.
