Celia Rose Gooding discusses “Strange New Worlds” Season 4 finale, where Uhura communicates with her future self across time and they help an alien entity in a white hole give birth; the episode sets up the fifth and final season.
The story links the Enterprise in Uhura’s present with a ship one year later, where Kirk is captain, Spock is first officer and Pike is an admiral. Future Uhura and Scotty are in a relationship; after Scotty dies on a shuttle mission, she learns he had died a year earlier, creating a time paradox.
The two Uhuras discover that music from the white hole is an alien entity warning them to stay back as it gives birth. They use remote-controlled drones to help. Gooding said it was challenging to play Uhura guiding her past self without revealing too much about the intervening year, and called their meeting a “passing of the torch” to “The Original Series.”
