Canada has announced more than Ca$4.5 million for 12 Rail Safety Improvement Program projects promoting safer behavior around trains and grade crossings, with education efforts aimed at trespassing and unsafe crossing practices in communities across the country.
The largest grants are Ca$1.8 million to Operation Lifesaver for education along active rail corridors and among groups at higher risk of rail incidents, and Ca$1.24 million to Canadian Safety Train Express for digital education and incident studies in 10 communities across five provinces with high trespassing rates. Other projects include newcomer-focused education in Manitoba, youth programs and safety-sign initiatives.
Since the program began in 2016, it has supported more than 1,200 projects, with total investment exceeding Ca$230 million.
