Canada and Vietnam elevated diplomatic ties to a strategic partnership during Vietnamese President Tô Lâm’s state visit to Ottawa. Their joint statement sets out cooperation on trade, energy, agriculture, digital transformation, defense and culture.
Bilateral trade totals $20.6 billion, mostly in exports to Canada; Prime Minister Mark Carney said it had more than doubled over the previous five years. The leaders also agreed to regular high-level contacts and formal diplomatic channels, and to start agriculture and security-and-law-enforcement dialogues.
The leaders pledged cooperation on transport, supply chains and infrastructure, and agreed to explore secure digital ecosystems, cybersecurity and data governance in accordance with domestic regulations and international law. A Canada-funded Vietnam Climate Resilient Municipalities project will connect Canadian municipalities with selected Vietnamese urban regions to share expertise on climate-resilient infrastructure and waste management.
