California and New York challenge Trump payouts for offshore wind cancellations

The Cool Down

California and New York are challenging the Trump administration in court over payments to energy companies to abandon approved offshore wind projects. They argue the deals are unlawful and could reduce power capacity states need while leaving households with higher bills.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a seven-state challenge seeking to block two cancellations: the federal buyback of Invenergy lease holdings tied to four East and West Coast projects, and a proposed Bluepoint Wind project off New York and New Jersey. Bluepoint agreed in April to halt its wind farm; the administration announced the Invenergy repurchase in June.

The two deals would direct $1.4 billion in taxpayer funds to companies for projects that would be canceled. The administration has promised nearly $4 billion overall to companies exiting projects across the country.
